LIFE UNIVERSITY

​​Scope of Work

4,000 s.f. renovation of an existing basement shell space in a student housing building for Life University. The center was designed to accommodate 40 preschool children in four spaces with an adjacent new playground space.

​​Design Approach

Life University is an institution devoted to health and body sciences so the design was crafted to capture the University’s mission.  The floor area was small and design elements could not encompass much space.  Therefore the walls and functional elements of the building were used to portray the systems and structure of the body - bones, skin, muscle and the circulatory system.  Exposed wood studs became metaphorical bones of the space while wood tongue and groove walls represented muscle.   An outer layer of painted drywall was emblematic of the skin and exposed HVAC ductwork was symbolic of the circulatory system.
