ABOUT FREESPACE
We design space that captures our client's unique identity and tells their story.
What gets us excited about architecture is how design can communicate, inspire, influence and adapt.

The design of space can reveal a client's spirit through the use of color, materials and light. Design can affect students test scores, how we feel and what we purchase. Design can change its function or form to reflect the needs of the users. We believe that good design is never preconceived, but rather it is the built form of a client's personality. Our approach to every single project is to translate the client's identity, mission, culture, and goals into three dimensions.

Our experience is steeped in education, hospitality, office, retail and residential projects but we believe that architecture is made up of component programmatic pieces that can be compiled into any project type. Our process of understanding the client's vision allows us to navigate complex programs. Be it adaptive reuse, interior tenant fit up or ground up building, our portfolio reflects a collaborative approach that is also sensitive to the specific site.

Freespaces...are not predesigned, predetermined, predictable, and predictive. They assert no control over the thought and behavior of people by conforming to typologies and coercive programs of use...Rather they offer a dense matrix of new conditions as an armature for living as fully as possble in the present...They become useful and acquire meaning only as they are inhabited by particular people. Existence continuously begins again, by the reinvention of itself.

Brian Dempsey, AIA, LEED AP, Principal
Founded by Brian Dempsey, AIA, LEED AP, Freespace runs every single project with his principal involvement.
What inspires Brian on every project is is the journey of uncovering the distinct spirit of each client and incorporating that into the design. How can a space influence it's users to be more effective? How can architecture help an organization grow and thrive? The start of each new project is like a blank canvas with unlimited potential. Helping a client paint that canvas is Brian's passion.

Brian is a LEED accredited, licensed architect in Georgia with more than 25 years of professional experience. Originally from Storrs, Connecticut, Brian graduated from both the University of Maryland and Georgia Institute of Technology. His architectural thesis at Georgia Tech examined memory and architecture through the redesign of Boston's Fenway Park. Much of his work encompasses projects containing education, recreation, dining and theatrical components.
Following 20 years of experience with large and small firms, Brian founded Freespace in 2013 with the mission of designing for those in the education, recreation, dining, and theatrical industries. He has been an adjunct professor for the 5th year focus studio at Kennesaw State University (fmr. Southern Polytechnic State University) and is a board member for the Architecture and Design Center.
